A natural journey to fluency -- and you'll never get lost
Understanding it
New words (and any words you might have forgotten) are always in front of your eyes on the special WordWall that is updated in real time during your class.
Each word "lights up" as your teacher uses it. Every time. You won't miss anything if you glance away or get distracted for a second.
No guessing about what words mean. You have to match a word and its meaning to acquire it. And no, words don't "get learned better" if you have to figure out what they mean!
Your brain figures out how the language works subconsciously while you focus on the fun. It's just like when you acquired your first language, only we can have more fun since you're not a toddler anymore!
You will understand 100% of the class, even on Day 1. Your teacher will actually check to make sure. If you don't understand, it's not on you! Dr. Waltz is not doing her job right, and she'll fix it right away.
Remembering It
You'll hear the new words over and over, but not in the same tired sentences like a textbook. They are recombined and used to express new and interesting meanings, over and over.
Illustrations and the story line and real conversations (not textbook dialogues) reinforce what things mean. There may be some jokes hidden in those drawings, too!
There's a private online video of your class for you to review if you like.
You'll get proven memory hooks that make new words easy to hold on to. And Dr. Waltz' exclusive Directional Gestures system makes tones completely unforgettable.
We focus on high-frequency words that are used in daily life, so the language is always useful. You're in charge of what we talk about. It can be silly or serious, but it's always connected to you. That's what sticks in anyone's mind.
Speaking It
Speaking emerges naturally as a result of lots of listening. It's like a bucket: if you pour enough water in, it will slop over the top with no effort.
You aren't forced to speak before you feel ready, but you're always welcome to speak. And Dr. Waltz is an expert in helping you express big ideas with few words while your vocabulary grows.
You'll respond to dozens of questions every lesson, even if it's just by nodding or shaking your head. And you can shape the class narrative by offering suggestions in Chinese or English.
Your accent will be better because you listened first! People who memorize lists first often end up with "Pinyin Accent". And anyway -- who wants to just memorize lists? It's better to hear how words are used in context.
Reading It
Once the sounds are in your head, we connect them to Chinese characters on the page. Directly. There's no need to do flashcards first.
You don't have to memorize characters before reading. Your ear will tell your eye what it's seeing. Really! (Nobody believes this until they experience it...)
You'll read our exclusive "Milo Vocabulary" AFR readers that recycle words constantly without getting predictable or boring. Reading is better than flashcards because you get whole language, not just individual words.
Reading reinforces the grammar you have already acquired and helps you be ready to use new structures. Grammar is naturally linked to ideas, not just memorized rules with random example sentences.
You will be reading actual stories, not just boring textbook dialogues. AFR books let you read long texts so your eyes get used to new characters while your brain stays entertained.
